Grade 6: “WHOSE GARBAGE WAS THIS?” ESSAY

August 8, 2008

STEP 3 on the sheet you were given is due on Wednesday, August 13th, 2008.

You can choose to write the assignment or type it. If you write it by hand, make sure you double space on A4 lined paper and follow the format below. If you type it, follow the format below and especially make sure it is double spaced. YOU MUST PRINT IT and hand it to me by Wednesday. Do not email me your work.

Remember that you need to reorganize your essay into a story—do not just recopy your notes. Your notes are meant to give you ideas and information to write your essay. Reread “Step 3” in the handout I gave you in case you are not sure what to do.

Assignments: Written Format

The work that you do in my class should be set up as follows at the top of each assignment:

Day/Month/Year                      TITLE                 Nickname / Homeroom #

  • Always write in BLUE PEN. You may use liquid paper to erase mistakes
  • Do not use a red or black pen. A red pen is meant only for my corrections and comments. In other words, ONLY Mr. William gets to use a red pen.
  • Only use a pencil to correct your mistakes after I have edited your work. You may also use a pencil to make drawings or fill in the words on a map (to test to see if they will fit properly).
  • If you have done your work in pencil, you will have to write over your words in a blue pen, just as you would on a map after you have used pencil to see if the words would fit.
  • If you have forgotten to write in pen, Mr. William will decide whether or not to accept it. Work that has been done in pencil may be counted as late if you are told to rewrite your assignment in blue pen.
  • Double space if I am going to edit your work. Single space if content, not conventions, will be checked.
  • In your notebooks, do not skip whole pages!
  • For journal entries and writing assignments in your “Journal and Writing” Notebook, start at the top of a new page each time you start a new writing assignment.
  • FOR A4 LINED PAPER, WRITE ON ONLY ONE SIDE!

Assignments: Typed Format

You should set up the page as I have demonstrated above. However, stick closely to the following format on the back of the page because you may have to resubmit your work if you have not formatted your work correctly:

  • If you are using Microsoft Word, you will need to use the following fonts: ARIAL or Times New Roman.
  • The font size should be 14.
  • Only use BOLD ( B ), ITALICS ( I ) and UNDERLINING ( U ) for titles, to show emphasis, names of movies, etc. (In other words, only if you need to. Entire papers should not be in bold or underlined.)
  • Do not change the margins—they should be the standard 1” margins.
  • DOUBLE SPACE your lines (in Windows 2003) by clicking on Format on the Menu Bar. Then Paragraph. Then select the Indents and Spacing tab. After that, under Line Spacing, select “Double.” Click OK.
  • Put page numbers in if you are printing more than one page by clicking on Insert on the Menu Bar. Then Pages Numbers. Click OK.
  • To show where new paragraphs begin, indent using the TAB key. Do not leave spaces between paragraphs because your page should already be double-spaced (see above).
  • If you wish to add a picture or pictures, make sure that you have written the required amount of text. In other words, if you were told to type one full page, but you type only half a page because you put a huge picture on the rest of the page, you have still only typed half a page so you will lose marks for not typing enough.
  • Only print on one side of the A4 paper! Do not print on both sides of the paper!
  • After you have printed your document IN BLACK INK, write your name, homeroom #, and date on the top right corner of each page IN PEN.
  • If you type up an assignment when you did not need to, you will receive one merit point. However, if the teacher tells you that you must type up the assignments, no merit points will be awarded. Moreover, no merit points will be awarded if a student hands in a second draft of a previous assignment.

The big question you want to know is “HOW LONG SHOULD IT BE?”

Your essay should be about two pages of double spacing if you write it by hand. Remember that you should not write on the back of the page!

If you type your essay, it should be about one page of double spaced lines. If your paper is longer, do not print on the backside of the paper!

Good luck!

Have a great holiday!

Mr. William
