A CRITIQUE OF VIOLENCE IN MODERN ENTERTAINMENT

Roman society enjoyed watching violent entertainment.  Are we that much different today?

The assignment is to critique the level of violence in a popular sport, video game, movie or TV series.  We already chose our topics in class.  You may NOT choose the same sport, video game, movie or TV series as another student in Grade 7!  For students who were away and did not get a chance to pick, you may do anything you want as long as nobody has posted the same thing before you have posted your video and critique.

To join the proper class on my Edmodo account, click JOIN and then type in the code that I gave you for the class.  Do not join the other grade 7 class!  Post ONE link to a SHORT YouTube video of the sport, video game, movie or TV series you are critiquing by following the instructions below.

  • Find a short YouTube video that gives a good example of your sport, video game, movie or TV series.  It must not be longer than THREE minutes and it must not have any swearing or nudity in it.   Basically, your grandmother should not be offended by it!
  • Below the YouTube video screen, click “Share” and then click “Embed” and then copy all the information that appears in the box below.
  • Go to your Edmodo account and then click on the textbox at the top of the page.  Then click “Link” to paste the code into the textbox that appears and you must type in this exact title:  YOUR NICKNAME Critique of Violence in NAME OF YOUR SPORT, VIDEO GAME, MOVIE OR TV SERIES.
  • Then, in “type your note here…”, answer the questions below using the proper starting words (for #1 to #3) WITH CLEAR REASONS or your own words (#4 to #6) and make sure you number your answers correctly AND GIVE CLEAR REASONS FOR YOUR IDEAS:
  1. Start off your first sentence in #1 with “I chose…” and then give the name of your sport, video game, movie or TV series and explain in no more than one sentence what it is.  Then describe some examples of violence in it.
  2. Is the level of violence realistic (“true to life”) or too “over the top” in your opinion?  Clearly state why you think or feel this way.   Start off your first sentence in #2 with “The level of violence…”
  3. Is it “mindless violence” or does the violence teach moral lessons about how to be good global citizens?  Clearly state why you think or feel this way.  Start off your first sentence in #3 with “The kind of violence is…”
  4. How might the level of violence affect people who play or watch it?  Give your opinions or even quote research on this matter (if applicable).
  5. Do people online think that that the sport, game, movie, or TV series is too violent for young people?  (Briefly summarize IN YOUR OWN WORDS the review of one person online as well as paste the link to that review and then state whether or not you agree with their review.)
  6. Do you think that young people should not be allowed to play or watch it?  Why or why not?

Then put the proper group (class) name in the appropriate textbox and click SEND.

I would also like you to comment on at least FIVE of the other critiques.  State why you agree or disagree with the opinions of your classmates.  Give clear reasons for your opinions and do not “flame” anyone or say anything that is mean, rude or may start a fight.
